IP address

IP address
The unique 32-bit number that identifies a computer on the Internet or some other Internet Protocol network. An IP address is usually written (in decimal) as four numbers separated by dots or periods and can be divided into two parts. The network address is made up from the highorder bits in the address, and the host address comprises the rest. In addition, the host part of the address can be further subdivided to allow for a subnet address. These numbers are very difficult for most people to remember, so humans tend to refer to computers by their domain names instead.
